K. A. M. Anwar is Professor of History and Dean, Research and Administration, at the Avani Institute of Design, Calicut. He was a close associate of Prof. M. G. S. Narayanan (1932–2025), for nearly five decades as a student and researcher, and belonged to his personal circle.
After graduating from Government Arts & Science College, Calicut, Anwar took his MPhil (History) and Doctorate degrees from the University of Calicut. His thesis ‘Feudal Society in Medieval Kerala’ was completed under the supervision of Professor Narayanan. After retiring from the Kerala government’s collegiate teaching service in 2010, he was involved in the establishment of Nilgiri College of Arts & Science, The Nilgiris, Tami Nadu, and worked as its founder Principal till 2017.
THE EVENT
Prof. K. V. Krishna Ayyar (1896–1982) joined the Zamorin’s College as a lecturer in 1919 and continued in the same institution till he retired in 1952 as the Vice-Principal. He authored
The Zamorins of Calicut (1938),
A History of Kerala (1965),
A Short History of Kerala (1966), and a history of Guruvayur (1986). Professor Ayyar is remembered as a great teacher who inspired generations of students to take up the study of history, particularly history of Kerala and Calicut.
Honouring the contribution of Professor Ayyar to Calicut’s history and culture, Calicut Heritage Forum annually organises an endowment lecture and awards a scholarship of Rs. 25,000 to a scholar who undertakes original research in history and culture of Kerala, preferably of Calicut.
